Introduction

This project was designed around the literature trade book, How to Eat Fried Worms by Thomas Rockwell.  This book will be read by the entire class, and upon its completion, the webquest is a wonderful culminating activity to integrate science, math, art, and writing.

Our quest will be to research information on an earthworm topic, and present this information to the class. We will then take each group's information and make a class book. We will also use the information we gather to create graphs, write recipes, and make our own worm desserts.  At the end of our quest,  mouths will be watering for the juicy worms that we will eat in class!

Learners

This lesson is designed for 4th grade Language Arts, with integration in the subject areas of Science, Math, Art, and Writing.  The lessons provided are for the class as a whole, but can be modified to accomodate a variety of levels and learning styles.
For example, lower level learners would be paired with a student who would be helpful to the child, and sensitive to their needs.  These students would assist in the reading of the materials, aid in the use of technology, and act as a scribe if necessary.
Academically gifted learners can be challenged by taking the technology aspect of the lesson even further. They would create a Powerpoint presentation  to summarize the Webquest activity for the class.  This presentation could be shared throughout the school.

Curriculum Standards

What will students learn as a result of this lesson? Describe the outcomes succinctly. Use the language of existing standards. For example:

Social Studies Standards Addressed

  • Recognize the relationships among the various parts of a nation's cultural life.
  • Learn about the mythology, legends, values and beliefs of a people.
Most lessons don't just teach a block of content; they also implicitly teach one or more types of thinking. In addition to describing learning outcomes within traditional subject areas, describe what kind of thinking and communications skills were encouraged by this lesson. Inference-making? Critical thinking? Creative production? Creative problem-solving? Observation and categorization? Comparison? Teamwork? Compromise?

Process

Notes to Teacher:

Organization- This Webquest is designed to be completed upon finishing the trade book How to Eat Fried Worms. The quest itself should take approximately one week to complete.

Grouping- Students will be placed in pairs for the research, word processing, and graphing activities.  Students will individually complete their recipe card and preparation of dessert.  For additional assignments, students may choose how to group themselves.

Problems/Misconceptions- The Powerpoint presentation is attainable with use of Powerpoint program and basic knowledge.  Many teachers and students alike feel that Powerpoint is too complicated and time consuming, when in fact, this is merely a myth.

Skills needed by teacher- Basic knowledge of word processing, graphing, and Powerpoint presentations.  These skills can be self-taught with the proper software and tutorials.

Suggested Extension Activities:

*Using information from our class book, collect your own earthworms at night and create a habitat for them. Observe their habits and keep a journal on your new pets.

*Using Kid Pix, Paint, or other program, draw your own worm or scene from the book How to Eat Fried Worms.  Print the picture and share with the class.

*Poll your friends and family, gather data, and create your own graph of the "Yuckiest Foods in the World".  Share your results with the class.

*Based on the adventures of "Herman the Earthworm" on the web, write a fictional story about the life of Herman's cousin, Helen.  Be sure to include all story elements: character, plot, setting, conflict, and resolution.

*Go back to www.yahooligans.com and do a search for "Herman the Earthworm". Navigate the site until you can find out how to email Herman.  Write him a message describing our class adventures with worms.

Conclusion
Whew! We have just finished our quest into the wonderful world of worms.  Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of these wiggly creatures, and can really relate to how Billy must have felt having to eat the slimy slitherers! Knowing what you do now, do you think it was easy for Billy?  Would you eat 15 worms, even for $50.00?
If you have enjoyed this quest, perhaps you would like to do some additional activities at home or in your spare time at school.  Remember, your quest doesn't have to stop just because the class moves on. Be an independent learner!!!
