Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus was born in 1451, October 12th in Genoa, Italy.  He was the son of a weaver.  In this time period sons were suppose to train to take over thier fathers trade.  Christopher did not want to become a weaver.  He dreamed of becoming a sailor.

As Christopher became an adult he believed the world was round even though most people believed the world was flat.  He thought he could sail straight to the West Indies from Spain without going around Africa.  King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain gave him the money and the ships to make his first voyage.

He sailed from Spain with three ships.  They were called The Nina, The Pinta, and The Santa Maria.  Instead of sailing to the West Indies, Columbus landed in the Bahamas.  He had discovered the New World.  Columbus made a total of three voyages to the New World.  He died in 1506 at the age of 1504 never realizing that he had discovered what we call America.
