Members present: Terry McClannon , Dick Riedl , Gary Moorman , Heather Clark , Claire Mamola, Robert Muffoletto
· The meeting opened with a continuing discussion about lap top options for faculty (instead of desktop)
· Terry reported the move of the media lab from 212 to O4 will take place at end of spring semester (second week of may)
o The faculty development area: CAROL, projects, Amer Reading Forum On-line; envisioned as a place where John and faculty could work together on developing
o ARTTA initiative could still use a place like that, even as program evolves
o we still need a small, hands on instructional site, maybe use the “innermost room” (where Lisa’s office is now), might benefit from media lab staff
o C & I computers and other equipment will stay downstairs
· Terry reported lecterns for every classroom will go on-line this summer: lectern, computer, VCR, can check out ELMO (6 rooms have Elmos), port for lap top. Not every room needs sound.
o 5th D will move to 212, add round tables and lectern
o O1a & b will have lectern and round tables
o One classroom will be used for new faculty offices
· Students outside RCOE checking out equipment from media lab: Terry wants faculty to turn in a class roster so staff will know that students are in our courses, and can contact faculty member if equipment isn’t returned.
o Going to database system for check out that will help reliability of receipt system
· Reserving labs for classes:
o Problems include scheduling for the entire semester as well as signing up and then not using it, when others could use it occasionally.
o Dean’s office schedules classes for the entire semester
o reserving for “maybe” using it – Terry doesn’t want to police appropriate use of the classroom
o department chairs need to be informed about classroom needs when submitting requests to Doris
o could lab staff keep track if reservations are kept and/or used appropriately?
o issue applies to lap top cart as well
o may be alleviated by appropriate equipped classrooms
o all faculty should be encouraged to use common courtesy, even request room changes if they get scheduled in a place that incorporates more technology than is needed
o 2nd or 3rd week of semester, recheck with faculty members regarding reserved times? May be too formal, might be better to work on a one-to-one basis
o other campus labs to use? Very few teaching labs, and can they be reserved? How do we find out about them?
· Hardware/software needs for lab? – seems to be in pretty good shape, netscape icon on desktop. Labs will probably go to Windows xp in the fall, no prediction when general faculty computers will be upgraded

Other business:
Claire reported that she used the computer lab at Isothermal, reserved for specific dates, and has been pleased with the interaction with the lab personnel. She stated that additional software would have been helpful (Inspiration, Where is the World is Carmen San Diego, Encarta). Dick indicates this is an on-going problem, but there should be a process for requesting specific software is specific labs (Doug May is contact person). Dick recommends compiling a list of the software you need, submit it to Extension, who gets it to Doug. There may be a new position who will be dedicated to coordinating these technology efforts with remote sites. Lab-packs might be a good solution but details regarding purchase and maintenance are unclear. Our laptop carts meet some of this need.
Meeting adjourned.
A nondebatable motion to adjourn was made, seconded, and approved by action of foot.
